Diabetes Complication – a Dreadful Condition
Ever wondered what happens when a chronic disease like diabetes goes unattended? Diabetes complications can even lead to the patient’s death. Strict control of blood sugar levels in the body can stop the diabetes complications from arising. However, if a loved one or anyone you know is struggling from diabetes complications, then the best advice for them is to follow the doctor’s advice.
What can be the various diabetes complications?
The main aim of all diabetic treatments is to prevent diabetes complications that can adversely affect the heart, kidney, nerve cells and eyes. The first and foremost complication is the damage caused to blood vessels. This can be divided into two types depending upon the blood vessels affected - small vessels diseases and large vessel diseases.
Small vessels complications involve damage to the eyes and limbs resulting in blindness and amputation of limbs. It might even lead to renal failure. Damage caused to the large vessel generates more serious complications like heart attacks and strokes. Large-vessel disease, including coronary heart disease and stroke, is the greatest cause of mortality in diabetes. Serious disorders like Peripheral and Ischemic heart diseases can also occur. Ischemic heart attack occurs when the main muscle of the body, does not get adequate blood supply.
Diabetes can affect the nerves controlling the bladder which makes it difficult for the patient to empty his/her bladder completely. This might lead to kidney failure. Also periodontal diseases, which can lead to tooth loss, occur frequently among diabetics.
Diabetes can also result in peripheral neuropathy or nerve damage. This leads to formation of ulcers and causes amputation of limbs. Another diabetes complication is known as hypoglycaemia or insulin shock. This condition is caused when there is too much insulin in the body compared to the amount of blood sugar. The brain gets deprived of energy in a hypoglycaemic condition.
Balanced Life style can save your life
If you have not controlled your blood sugar level and face one or more of these complications, rush to your doctor. Small vessel diseases are the first signs of diabetes complications.
